They did, however, put up a strong fight against the soft and hard velcro. Only mild markings were left by the latter, but nothing noticeable enough to throw them out. This option from Calzedonia is as close as you can get to blackout tights.

The unevenly woven tights also snagged easily, and they didn’t seem like they’d last very long. Have you ever thought about stretching your tights to their max limits? While we don’t recommend doing that at home (you don’t want to ruin them after all), this is one pair you could actually stretch from wall to wall. We did, and were pleasantly surprised to see them spring right back to their original silhouette. The stretch and elasticity are clearly next level, which means they’re also super comfortable.
Comfortable, supportive tights that last: Commando Ultimate Opaque Matte Tights
It wasn’t too severe, but I did find myself tugging up both the legs and the waistband two or three times. According to our Diversity Pledge, 15% of products in our newly-published market roundups will feature Black-owned and/or Black-founded brands. At the time of publishing, we were not able to find enough black tights from a Black-owned and/or Black-founded business. If you know of one we should consider, please email us at and we will evaluate the product ASAP. Byrdie contributor Kylee McGuigan has worn her fair share of black tights over the years. As a former high school dance team member, she had to search high and low for the perfect black tights for practices, rehearsals, or even for shows.

A home storage solution that honors the traditional; our Classic Collection makes use of our exclusive soft edge treatment. Show off your favorite pieces with our flat-face, half-overlay doors and drawers, available in dozens of materials and colors. It should also be a soothing space where you prep for the day ahead and relax at the end of the night.
What impressed our tester most about these tights was how resistant they were to the velcro and jewelry tests which were performed to assess for snagging, ripping, and pilling. The tights held up almost perfectly to all of the tests, and given how affordable they are, it makes this feat even more impressive. The Fogal Velour Opaque tights were decently comfortable, but the 1-inch waistband created a slight muffin-top effect, and the thick seams were noticeable under clothes. These tights are made from recycled material, and you can also recycle them down the line.
When tested against both soft and rough velcro, we did notice that the fabric was completely unbothered by the former, but it lightly pilled against the latter. Regardless, we were extremely pleased with the overall look and durability — and we’re not the only ones. For many professional stylists, including Michaela Leitz, Spanx tights are a go-to.
But be aware that each color is sold on a different product page, so you may have to spend some time sorting. Pulling on the Sheertex tights took more muscle than was needed with other pairs. But unlike the Snag tights, these tights don’t feel flimsy or gauzy, so there’s no need to be overly careful. The Sheertex tights were the warmest non-wool option we tested, but they weren’t quite as comfortable as the Snag or Commando tights, simply because the fabric wasn’t as soft. The waistband was nice and wide, and these tights offered gentle compression against the stomach but didn’t feel uncomfortably tight. If you prefer extra support, they’re also available, for around $30 more, with a control top.
I continuously scraped each pair for one minute against a rough brick surface. And I tried to catch the tights in a zipper by running each pair through the zipper 10 times. The fabric roughened and pilled somewhat against brick and survived a yank through a zipper—without sustaining any fatal tears, runs, or holes. However, if you’re hard on your tights, we suggest the Swedish Stockings Olivia or the Sheertex tights, both of which survived those tests with nary a tug or a fuzz. “I'd recommend this for my friend who enjoys the sheer tight look, and can afford multiple pairs,” suggests our tester. If you are very careful with your garments, then these are a beautiful and comfortable addition to your tights wardrobe. The Wolford Mat Opaque tights are some of the least comfortable tights we tested. While the waistband is stretchy and comfortably supportive, the nylon-elastane fabric fit too tautly on my thighs and hips and these tights slipped down throughout the day. Additionally, the fabric feels too thin, like it would wear out over time.
Most testers thought the tights—made of 90% nylon and 10% elastane—would be good on a cool day but maybe not for a 10-block trek in a blizzard. If you regularly rely on tights to keep you warm in inclement weather, or if you tap them as a layering piece, we suggest you try the Wolford Merino Tights. The semi-formal shoe matches the sleek aesthetic that comes with tights.
For this test, we measured the opacity both on the body and while stretched against a light. In order to truly be considered opaque, each pair needed to pass both tests (Calzedonia 100 Denier Total Comfort Soft Touch Tights are as opaque as they get). Opaque tights are typically thicker and provide a little more warmth. They are great options for the winter, and for occasions that call for a formal dress code. Sheer and semi-sheer fabrics have a smaller fabric count, and allow a hint of your skin to show from underneath. But options like the Skims Full Control Tights are impressively durable despite being a semi-sheer option.
And as a native Ohioan who spent three years living in New York City, I’ve relied on them for warmth, too. One is Netherlands-based Tirzah Lopez (better known by her blog, Felina Tiger), a content creator who writes about her life as a wheelchair user. Because her legs tend to get chilled in her chair, Lopez relies heavily on tights. The second is Lindsey Donnell, a ballerina at the Dance Theatre of Harlem, who wears tights every day. I also informally polled my Wirecutter colleagues to get their thoughts on tights (it turns out that they had many). Their brand endorsements, condemnations, and quality demands shaped my search.
The Hue Super Opaque Tights with Control Top were soft and stretchy, but the control top was too stretchy and not constrictive enough for any shaping effect. Those in the market for control-top tights would find these ineffective. Ultimately, we decided that though these were cooler than many others, they weren’t worth the higher price.
